Atop a rocky headland at the northern tip of the Isle of Lewis stands an 1862 lighthouse of red brick designed by David Stevenson of the famous Stevenson family of engineers. This is the windiest place in the UK, and the lighthouse is still in operation.

Captain Fraser's Folly stands on a hill south of Uig harbour and offers wonderful views over Uig and west towards the Western Isles. Owned by the Uig Hotel and built in 1860, this little tower has arched windows and arrow-slits. The interior of the Folly is not open to the public.

One of the most iconic visitor attractions in the Cairngorms, the old packhorse bridge across the River Dulnain at Carrbridge was built in 1717. The bridge was built to allow funeral processions to access Duthil Church when the river was in spate. Because of this, the bridge was known locally as 'the coffin bridge'.

One of the great feats of civil engineering in history, the Churchill Barriers are a series of causeways linking South Ronaldsay to Orkney Mainland. They were erected during World War II to prevent the passage of German submarines into Scapa Flow, used as a naval base by the British.

One of the most fascinating historic sites in the southern isles, Dun an Sticir is best thought of not as a dun in the traditional sense, but a complex of associated structures. The dun, whose name translates loosely as 'Fort of the Skulker', is set in a small tidal loch at the extreme northern end of North Uist.

The low foundations of a fort can still be seen on an island in a small loch near the northern tip of North Uist. The name of the fort tells something of its history; Dun Aonghais translates as Angus's Fort, and it was here that a man called Angus the Fair lived around 1520.

The extensive remains of one of the finest examples of post-medieval architecture in Scotland, located beside the Cathedral and opposite the old Bishop's Palace. The Earl's Palace was built by Earl Patrick Stewart, using forced labour to create a grand residence in French Renaissance style.

The Fairy Bridge is an early 19th-century bridge across the Bay River, north of Dunvegan. According to legend, it was here that a chief of Clan Macleod said goodbye to his wife, a Faerie princess, when she left the world of mortals forever.
