Only the foundation walls remain of the very simple cottage where Flora MacDonald was raised. Sometimes wrongly referred to as her birthplace, as far as we know Flora MacDonald was not, in fact, born here, but she did live at this simple stone cottage for a time as a child.

Fort Charlotte is a substantial artillery fort begun in 1665 to guard the Sound of Bressay from the threat of invasion during the Second Dutch War. Despite the high and massively constructed walls, the Dutch took Fort Charlotte in 1673 and burned it to the ground.

The Gates of Negapatam are a peculiar folly in the form of three battlemented arches with ruined pillars. 'The Gates' are also known as the Fyrish Monument. The monument is best seen from a distance, as it is a 40-minute climb to the folly.

If there is a more beautifully situated monument in Britain than the Glenfinnan Monument, I have yet to see it. This striking stone tower stands in isolated splendour on the shore of Loch Shiel, close to the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard on 19 August 1745.
