Balvaird Castle is a late 15th-century L-plan tower house, surrounded by a later 16th-century wall with a courtyard and gatehouse. The castle stands on a small rise of land, and consists of a strong central keep with a main block and projecting wing, with a stair tower in the angle of the two sections.

In a field near the hamlet of Moulin stand the ruins of a 14th-century castle built by the Earl of Atholl. The Black Death struck the castle in 1500, killing all the inhabitants and the castle was destroyed to stop the disease from spreading.

Broughty Castle stands on the north bank of the River Tay, just east of modern Dundee. The castle was built in 1495 on a site that was first fortified about 40 years before. The castle builder was Andrew, 2nd Lord Grey. At the core of the castle is an imposing four-storey tower house which was augmented by low outbuildings within encircling curtain walls.

One of the best examples of 16th-century Scottish tower house architecture in the country, Claypotts Castle was built between 1569 and 1588 by John Strachan, on land leased from Lindores Abbey. The Strachans sold the castle to Sir William Graham of Ballunie, and it was later owned by 'Bonnie Dundee', John Graham of Claverhouse.

Invermark Castle is a 16th-century fortified tower house in a superb setting at the head of Glen Esk, near the eastern end of Loch Lee. It was built around 1529 by the Lindsays of Edzell, and once served as a refuge for Sir David Lindsay after he murdered his kinsman in Edinburgh.
